Taking a break from my normal ‘life’ posting to linkup with Lindsay at The Lean Green Bean for her fourth Pin It! Party. Lindsay’s blog is amazingly awesome – providing recipes, roundups of articles you should read, and recently, musings from her hubby. Even when my reading list gets out of control, she’s one of the blogs I try to read on a regular basis.

Seated Working Workout – Lindsay came up with this great list of suggestions on how to move for five minutes every hour. While this workout won’t get you moving for five whole minutes, it’s inconspicuous enough to do in your workspace and not get stared at by co-workers.

Seated Working Workout

For many of us, working means being seated for the majority of our day with eyes in front of a screen. Not exactly the picture of health, is it? (Truth? It’s killing you.)

Today, I’m determined to move. Even though I have a ton of stuff to do, I devised a quick workout to remind me that being seated doesn’t mean that I have to be sedentary.

I’ve tried it out and all these moves can be done in the comfort of my office without attracting weird looks from co-workers. SCORE!

Notes:
Don’t be afraid to use your desk/table/chair as support – especially with the moves requiring you to use both legs. We want those lower abs to be tight!

Getting Crafty for Under $20

Valentine’s Day is on the horizon and, being on a budget, the JA and I can’t exactly afford to decorate the house for every holiday…yet. We have some heart towels and a lot of red (multi purpose for Christmas and Valentine’s) but nothing for our front room.

So I decided to get crafty and came up with a homemade burlap banner – for under $20.

I bought the supplies at Michael’s – a 24 pack of burlap squares and twine (totaling $12 with tax.) We had the oversized index cards, markers, and tape at home, but I can’t imagine them costing more than $10. (Hence, the $20 total.)

Step 1: Write your message. I used a red sharpie and then accented it with pink highlighter.

Step 2: Get it together. I used tape to join the index card and burlap together not only because I want to reuse the burlap, but because my Type A personality could easily correct and crooked or off-centered letters.

Step 3: Twine time! I placed the twine on my mantle, measured it out, and taped it in place.

Step 4: Spread the love. Again, I used tape to affix the back of the burlap square to the twine. If you rearrange the squares a bit I would recommend using multiple pieces of tape to keep the lettering in place.

Slower Than Molasses

This weekend was both marvelous and molasses-like.

Saturday, I made plans for the day while the JA was in class – going into work, a little shopping, visiting with friends…a typical day. Until about noon when it was reported that there was a shooter at a local mall. The one I was planning to visit. Luckily, I was not there, but three people were killed and four were injured. It’s terrifying for something to hit so close to home and I was concerned. Everyone I know is fine, but I am continuing my thoughts and prayers for the community and the family/friends of the victims.

As planned, after putting in a few hours at work and at the gym, I make a visit to see my friend Liz and my beautiful goddaughter. We spent a few hours catching up, playing, and hanging out. It gave great balance to the day, and certainly lifted spirits.

We were supposed to go out of Saturday night, but quickly realized that we both were exhausted and bailed on our plans. We were in bed by 10p. How lame are we? All for the best, because Sunday we had plans to be very productive.

And we were..somewhat – we tried a new church, gave the pup a bath, did a few loads of laundry, and I finally got my shopping completed. I’m having a bit of fun with decorating now that we’re in the house, and the JA has a birthday coming up. Both require some effort! I bought a few picture frames with the hope of actually getting pictures OFF my camera and onto the walls, and some materials to complete a craft that I’m hoping to share with you later.

It was good to have a weekend with nothing set in stone. We got the chance to reset and recharge so we can finish out January strong!

Friday Five: Entertainment Edition

This week has been one for the books. I’ve had such a hard time getting motivated to do actual ‘work’ work but have made great strides in other areas. Oh well, who cares? It’s FRIDAY!

Here are some things that have been keeping me occupied in the entertainment area:

Breaking Bad – We had heard all great things about this series and were super excited to see what all the hype was about. With the JA being a chemistry teacher, we thought it would add an extra element of fun. Yet, we’re on season two and still aren’t blow away. Anyone else feel the same? Does it get better?

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir – OMG, you guys. If you haven’t read this book, stop and go get it. I couldn’t even make it through the Table of Contents without giggling. I tried to read it before bed the other night and the JA told me I had to leave because I was shaking the bed with my stifled laughter. BINGO! – Tonight I’m attending a fundraiser for a local school. With Coach purses & Pandora bracelets up for grabs, I’m hoping to come home a winner. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Candy Crush – I know this shouldn’t really count as something fun, but it’s been preoccupying my late nights. I couldn’t get past this one level and FINALLY beat it today! If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon for this Tetris-like game yet, be warned. It’s a major time suck. The JA started playing a month ago and won’t let me forget that I’m the one that got him into ‘this mess.’

The Buddy System

It’s true. Things are better in twos – Britney & Justin (my teenaged heart is devastated they didn’t work out), pant legs, cookies…you get my point. Yet, the majority of my time running has been solo and I liked it like that. However, I’ve recently found that the buddy system could be much better for me (at least in the winter) and here are some reasons why:

1. Safety – The other day I almost got hit by a car. I’m fine and was more frustrated than anything else. A middle-aged gentleman was crossing a one way street and was looking in the direction of traffic instead of in front of him as he pressed the gas pedal. I was in the cross intersection as he pulled up to his and figured he saw me as he was pulling to a stop. Apparently not. I was lucky enough to get out of the way (it seemed by a hair), but it was a harrowing experience. I’m not saying that I’ll never run by myself again, but when I do, I’ll make sure to wave/scream/jump up and down before crossing an intersection when cars are around.

2. Motivation – This morning, we had a two-hour delay. Yet, true to his morning person form, the JA made a plan to be up and at the gym by 6:30a. I, begrudgingly, said I would join him. It turned out to be just the kick in the butt I needed to ramp up my day. 2.5 mile intervals on the treadmill, 1.5 miles on the elliptical, and one mile walk with the pup to cool down = 5 miles before 8a. BOOM.

3. CamaraderieRunning with Lauren this past weekend made the bitter cold more manageable. We got to know each other better and both agreed that the almost 6 miles we completed went by much quicker than had we each gone at it alone. Plus, when you’re in house buddy looks like this, how can you say no?

4. Competition/Accountability – Pride is a big thing for me. I don’t want to be the one to call it quits first. If I say I’m going to be somewhere and there are people counting on me, I’ll be there no matter what. I don’t want to be the first one to ‘chicken out’ and if it’s agreed upon that we’ll do a certain number of miles or a certain speed or a certain new workout (or especially a certain new food), I’m there. Let’s get to it.

Do you find it better to work out with a buddy or by yourself? I’m a big fan of group exercise for a lot of these same reasons, but there’s something to be said about doing things all by yourself.

Snow Excuses Total Body Workout

Sorry I’m not sorry for the lack of blogging yesterday. The JA and I were up and into work at 6:30a to get some things done before the storm hit. We got home and took W for a quick walk because, well, dogs don’t take snow days.

I did some work for the blog and by the time I was ready to take a break, it was 4p. Why is it that days off and weekends pass so much quicker than days I’m working?

The roads are still dicey and the temps are very low (for us Baltimoreans), so we’re on snow day no.2. With no walk for Watson, it’s easy to get sucked into the couch. I have to remind myself that the best way to warm up is to get moving!
