First Trimester Recap

I know I said this isn’t going to turn into a baby-centric blog, but I did want to let you know what’s been happening during those first few weeks after I announced my pregnancy.

HORMONES

The biggest issue for me was learning the limits of my hormone-ridden, pregnant self. If you recall, I ran my first half marathon just before week 9 of my pregnancy. I was burned out from running (or so I originally thought) and didn’t push myself as much as I know I could have. Upon confirming my pregnancy, I also started scaling back during some of my other workouts. I was unsure of how frequent/intense my workouts could be. It was hard knowing that I probably could have pushed myself harder and further, but wanting to protect my (very small) child. Things have gotten better since then, but I definitely had a moment or two where the JA had to talk me through a particularly rough patch while I sat crying and saying, ‘But I could do all this fine before!’

In regard to diet, my doctor has the ‘everything in moderation’ mentality. One of my first questions about food, being from Baltimore, was, “Can I have crabs this summer?” He answered, “Yes” and I was one happy lady. Ice cream has become a regular staple in our grocery cart in addition to gummy bears. I’ve scaled back on other proteins like chicken and fish, but have enjoyed baked ham, shrimp, and tuna here and there. While I do want to do what’s best for my baby, I know that making myself happy will produce a happy child. So if I want an small decaf iced coffee in the morning, I get one.

One question I get asked from non-pregnant friends is about booze. I’m not going to lie and say that I don’t miss it. However, the urge to drink simply isn’t there anymore. I do miss champagne, but have used sparkling water to get my carbonation fix. Crabs aren’t the same without a nice cold brew, but I know that this period will only last a short time. Additionally, since my doctor is in the ‘everything in moderation’ camp, he has said that a glass of wine here and there wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I don’t trust my heavy-handed self to pour a correctly portioned glass. If I am to have a glass, it will be with dinner at a restaurant.

I think that’s it. We’re just passed the halfway point (ridiculousness), so let me know if you have any questions for the next recap!

Summer Snapshots

So good to see you again! There’s been a lot going on over here, but maybe not in the way that you would think. Yes, we’re prepping for Baby A+. Yes, I’m still exercising. Yes, meals are still being had. And yes, Watson is still being one of the best dogs around town (biased parent, party of one!).

However, I’ve found that this summer I’d rather hang pictures on walls than post them to one.

I’m savoring my ice cream instead of watching it drip as I check on social media.

I’m trading getting up early to blog for sleeping in and spending time with my family of three.

I’m bumping to the beat, but with a bump of my own.

And I’m okay with that.

Additionally, some changes have happened on the professional front. I’ve accepted a new position at a local university and start at the end of the month. It’s been a crazy few months getting everything in place, but I feel that this is the best move for myself and our family.

If you’d rather have a more consistent look at life from my perspective, follow me on Instagram. It’s much more in line with my slower summer pace.

Talk again soon!

Fantastic Father’s Day

How is it Monday already? Seems to me like weeks are moving to slowly and weekends, as always, are flying by. I’ve been bogged down with a nasty head cold since late last week and have done my best to enjoy the gorgeous Baltimore weather without sneezing my brains out. Not such an easy task, my friends.

I finally got things under control (with a little help from Sudafed) and we had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend. Friday night was spent separately – he went to a kickoff to summer party and I went out to dinner with a co-worker and an ex-coworker. It’s so nice to get outside of the office, relax, and catch up. After diner, I swung by the party for a bit but left almost right away due to the threat of thunderstorms. (Girlfriend does not drive well while it’s both dark AND pouring down rain.)

Saturday was spent running errands and with the JA’s maternal side of the family. His grandmother was in town and his cousin was having a birthday party, so we got to see almost everyone on that side for a little bit. We quickly came home to host game night with our neighbors out on our back porch. It’s easily one of my favorite spaces in the summer months and with a few new additions from Target, is absolutely gorgeous as day turns to night.

Sunday we hosted Father’s Day dinner at our home for about 20 people (my immediate family and JA’s paternal side). Not wanting to be overwhelmed with preparations, we did a potluck and there was more than enough food to go around. The highlight? This cake from his Aunt Susan. Absolutely delicious, and I may or may not be contemplating having the last leftover piece for breakfast this morning. You only live once, right?

It was a perfect weekend, and timed perfectly, because we could share some exciting news with everyone in person. Stay tuned to find out what it was!

What’s your favorite part of family get togethers? Mine is the company, but food is a close second 🙂

Time to Get Away

As I mentioned in my post last week, one of the ways that the JA and I keep the romance alive in busy times is to have individual ‘us’ times. While this weekend wasn’t exactly ‘me’ time, it was the perfect treat to celebrate the end of the school year.

My three college girlfriends and I have tried to get a girls-only weekend on the books since, well, graduation. Between full-time jobs, weddings, and kids, it got pushed off again and again. Sure, we saw each other, but this weekend, we finally got our getaway.

Terrible Trio

WV June 2014

Friday afternoon, we packed into our respective cars and made our way to Canaan Valley, WV. Food was shared, talking was done, and we hit the hay around 10p. (Don’t be too jealous.)

Saturday morning, we had breakfast at Amelia’s and then headed back to the condo to chill and relax. After a few hours (and some leftover pizza), we gussied ourselves up and went to dinner. The drive through Canaan Valley State Park was gorgeous and filled with wildlife. The view from the resort dining room wasn’t so bad, either.

Sunday, we returned to Amelia’s for breakfast before cleaning up and heading home. I have to admit, it was good to be back with my boys – even if it meant I spent most of the night doing laundry and prepping for this week.

What’s your ideal getaway? What do you dread most upon returning home?

Fueling Better

It’s no secret that my morning workouts have been sparse since finishing my first half marathon earlier this month. Actually, my knee hast quite been the same since and running anything over two miles has brought a searing pain in my knee. No bueno.

So I stopped running for a bit. I miss it terribly and have plans to take it slow, but also test things out after fully resting it for a bit longer. In the meantime, I returned to my first love…the barre. It was a less than triumphant return, and one filled with lots of aches and pains. Yet, I keep going back and will even sub a class next week.

With my main source of cardio on hold, I’ve switched up my routine (yet again) to continue being active while strengthening. My morning and afternoon walks with Watson have been reinstated and I’m jumping on the elliptical more. However, one thing that hasn’t changed is my need to refueling a smart and effective manner. Training gave me great insight on how food intake plays a part in performance.

So imagine my delight when I received a package from Vega. If you remember, I received a variety of products from them earlier this year and was eager to see what this package contained.

The game that wasn’t.

Outdoor dining’s the best.

We had a great, relaxing weekend. The weather cooperated for the most part & kept us busy outside. We tried to soak up as much as we could, seeing as graduation is right around the corner and our lives get a bit busier in these net few weeks. Simply spending time hanging out, while not exactly riveting for you readers, is just what we need to stay sane.

Here’s to a great week!

Easing In

Well, it’s the first official day back from Spring Break and, boy, is this week looking crazy! A deadline today, a photo shoot on campus tomorrow and Wednesday, an alumni event Wednesday and Thursday, and my half marathon on Sunday. Good thing I took next Monday off to relax!

As the JA and I eased our way back into ‘work mode’ we also enjoyed ourselves this weekend. Here’s what we accomplished:

– Spruce up the house. In light of our tree root incident from earlier this year, our landscaping left a lot to be desired. We took a trip to Lowe’s this weekend and attacked the front yard and flower boxes. We also planted herbs and veggies in the backyard. Now only if the grass patches would grow a bit faster, we’d be good to go!

– Hang out with friends and family. Nettifred came into town on Friday and that can’t happen without some bonding time – especially when she brings her new dog with her. I use the term dog loosely here, as Winnie weighs about 8 lbs. total and stands only a few inches tall, but she’s so cute. A trip home also means that we do things specific to MD, like grabbing frozen custard at our favorite local ice cream stand. Delicious!

– Let loose and have fun. Friday night we indulged a bit and made an old-school staple for dinner: pizza bagels. While I know these are not the healthiest options, I’m all about balance and these guys totally hit the spot. The JA commented that they were, “totally picture worthy,” and I happily snapped and posted the pic to Instagram. Additionally, we couldn’t ignore our own pup! Watson had plenty of time being pet and pampered, but we also got a bit goofy with him. I think he looks pretty distinguished, don’t you?
