Treats Not Tricks

It’s April Fools Day and I have a few confessions to make to you. First, I dislike this ‘holiday.’ I’m not a prankster and just don’t get it. You never know how someone else’s day is going and pulling a prank on them could tip them over the proverbial edge. Be careful out there today, jokesters!

Second confession: yesterday was the first day in my training cycle that I decided to skip a workout without a valid reason. In the past few weeks, I’ve bailed because of snow and sickness. Yesterday, I simply didn’t want to stretch & strengthen. My heated yoga class was cancelled by the instructor, it was gorgeous outside, and it was Opening Day for the Orioles.

Instead of exercising, the JA and I ended up going out to dinner. We ended up driving a bit to chow down at one of our favorite spots when we were living in our townhouse – T Bonz Bar & Grille. Not only do they have a great beer selection, but they are also the place that first served us crabby tots (tater tots covered in crab dip, Old Bay, and cheese). We settled in for the second half of the game and were happy to cheer the O’s on to a win!

We rolled ourselves home to fulfill our puppy parent duties and decided to continue the fun with dessert and a Scandal. We started watching the series on Saint Patrick’s Day and are completely hooked. It’s actually taken over for Breaking Bad, which we have yet to finish. (Anyone else not impressed? We’re just not that into it.)

That was that. No workout. No feeling guilt about not working out. I took advantage of the day and I’m not sorry one bit. (I’m saying this prior to my scheduled run for the day. Check in with me tonight and see how I feel!)

Speaking of treating yourself, if you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed I’m on a lipstick kick. Now, I’m not really a lipstick person – it rubs off on everything, it’s got a waxy feel and smell, and I’ve just never been a fan. I’m much more of a lip stain person, as evidenced by my collection of three different Revlon Just Bitten Lipstains. I really like that they’ve got a bit of a peppermint kick, provide long-lasting color, and keep my lips moisturized. (For a full review, click here.)

But when offered the chance to try a new beauty product for free, I couldn’t refuse. I  was sent Rimmel London’s Moisture Renew lipstick in As You Want Victoria as part of a campaign through Influenster.

I mentioned last week that it was one of my Five Things I’m Loving so it should come as no surprise that I wore it multiple times throughout the past few weekends. I wore it most of weekend: Friday at work (and on my run), and Sunday for a work event (and then again at the gym). I think I’m a convert. From the minute I put it on my lips, I was surprised at how smooth it was. The color’s a bit bold, but didn’t transfer onto my glassware too much and lasted through eating, drinking, running and ellipticall-ing. I may just be converted!

Card Me

I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not at the front of the curve when it comes to technology. Case in point? My main computer is my sister’s hand-me-down from her college days. It has to remain plugged in at all times or it goes into hibernation mode. It also has six different color lines that show up on the screen. One blinks. And the JA wonders why I spend the majority of time on my iPhone.

Even the power cord has given up.

Even the power cord has given up.

ANYWAY, I digress. Technology. When I bought my DSLR camera, Daddy Janks somehow knew that I would not want to be using the cords to transfer photos from my memory card to the computer. So he bought me the Kingston MobileLite G2. A memory card reader that plugs into a USB port, this little guy has made my technological struggles a lot more bearable.

memory card reader

The G2 has been updated (and aptly named the MobileLite G3). The G3, as described on the company’s website, is a “compact, multi-functional USB 3.0 card reader [that] lets your easily transfer digital data, photos, games, music and more stored on Flash cards between all kinds of digital devices. MobileLite G3 has retractable covers on each side that make it compact and protect the USB connector and Flash cards from damage. It’s ultra-portable and backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Dimensions: 2.45″ x 1.16″ x 0.646″ (62.15mm x 29.40mm x 16.40mm), Operating Temperature: 32°F to 140°F (0°C to 60°C).”

Highly recommend for those who, like me, have not upgraded to a computer with an SD card reader. It’s so small that it can fit anywhere, so it’s also ideal for any traveler.

Saving Face

I meant to post this yesterday, but it still needed photos and tweaks (it still could use a bit more editing, but what can you do, eh?). Therefore, this week’s Try It Tuesday is on Wednesday. Sorry for the delay!

One of the new trends in makeup/face care is BB Cream. This ‘all in one’ product is described as a, “multi-benefit skincare that combines intense hydration with tinted minerals and vitamin C.”

Before I went on our honeymoon, I saw a commercial for Garnier’s BB Cream and thought that I’d give it a whirl. In general, I have combination skin with a bit of redness and a few dark spots. My normal makeup routine consists of moisturizer, foundation with concealer, powder, blush and mascara. With this product, I was hoping to combine the first two steps (and save some space in my carry on while still having makeup in case our large suitcase got misplaced).

In short, I LOVE it. The lightweight, creamy texture feels good on my skin and the overall texture of my facial skin feels smoother after a few uses. It also does a decent job of covering my flaws. You’ll also see that it brightens my skin tone.

While I still use moisturizer/foundation once in a while, this product has replaced those two steps in my regular routine. Retailing for approx. $10 and found at many drugstores (I got mine at Target) it’s a wonderful product for a great bargain.

This post is part of my Try It Tuesday series. (Even though today is Wednesday.) To view my recommendations for products in a variety of areas, click here. If you have something you’d like me to try, feel free to email me a

Carry On

Yesterday evening, the JA and I hung out with these guys.

Well, them and some other teachers. It was a great way to relax and de-stress from the week. (It’s really ONLY Wednesday?!) We’re now less than two months away from the wedding and, honestly, I’ve been flipping out. My goal is to get a ton done before school starts in just a few weeks. So much to do in so little time!

Anyway, back to dinner. Our responsibility was to bring watermelon for the group. We purchased a small one and went to town cutting into slices. Once perfectly portioned, we needed to figure out a way to transport it all! Thank goodness for our cupcake carrier.

We took out the inner tray and fit the majority of slices into the top portion of the carrier, leaving the bottom half at home. It was portable and easy to use. When I received it as a gift, I was told I’d use it for more than cupcakes. I doubted it, but obviously have been proved wrong!

Do you have an alternative used for a gift you’ve received?

Protect Yourself

Today’s Try It Tuesday focuses on a subject that will soon become an everyday part of my life: sunscreen. Between the 4th of July parade, our hikes, and vacation right around the corner, I knew I needed a sunscreen that could handle the rays but didn’t leave me feeling greasy and gross.

Target to the rescue! I signed up through the company’s Facebook page to receive a summer beauty bag which included Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen

This stuff works. I have used it while sweating up a storm (gross, I know) without reapplying and it lasted all day. It’s lightweight and doesn’t have too much of a scent. The only con I can find is that it absorbs so quickly that I felt I needed to use a bit just to cover myself.

This is my first time using such a high SPF, and I was pleased it protected me well! The traits with which I was most impressed was the lightness of the product and its ability to withhold both sweat and water.

I can’t wait to take it to the beach. I’m looking forward to working on my tan, but certainly don’t need to return looking like a lobster!

Note: I was not paid to endorse this product. I just like it so much I decided to review it for my Try It Tuesday series.
